Crohn's Disease Constipation Treatment

Acupuncture has been considered an effective form of Chinese medicine to treat Crohn’s disease. Patients have reported less pain, enhanced digestion, and even remission since receiving the treatment. Additionally, Chinese herbs have proven to be successful for Crohn’s when used in combination with acupuncture because they treat the potential causes of that lead to the condition. For example, some herbs treat inflammation from dietary sensitivities while others treat digestive issues such as a weakened immune system or dulled taste buds. Furthermore, many medical professionals concur that patients can greatly benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of Chinese medicines such as acupuncture and herbal remedies due to their ability to treat Crohn’s disease discomfort without the use of pharmaceutical drugs.

There are several symptoms associated with Crohn’s disease, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, and fatigue. Some people live symptom-free for most of their lives, while others live with chronic, severe symptoms. Ulcerative Colitis, also known as Crohn’s disease, is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. The colon and small intestine are the most common sites for Crohn’s disease. The gastrointestinal tract (GI) can be affected anywhere from your mouth to your esophagus. The colon and small intestine are the main sites of infection in ulcerative colitis. There are parts of the GI tract that can be affected and others that can be skipped. It can range from mild to debilitating in severity. Over time, symptoms can change and vary. The disease can lead to life-threatening complications and flares in severe cases. It is common for Crohn’s disease symptoms to develop gradually. Over time, certain symptoms may also worsen. While sudden and dramatic changes in symptoms are possible, they are rare.

Crohn’s disease may present with the following symptoms:

  • Dysentery
  • Cramps in the abdomen
  • Stools containing blood
  • The flu
  • Tiredness
  • Appetite loss
  • Loss of weight
  • Constipation after bowel movements that don’t seem to be empty
  • Constantly needing to go to the bathroom

As the disease progresses, the symptoms may become more severe. Some symptoms are listed below.

  • Pain and drainage near your anus are caused by a perianal fistula.
  • Mouth ulcers or anus ulcers.
  • Joint and skin inflammation.
  • A decrease in exercise capacity or shortness of breath as a result of anemia.
  • Acupuncture mobilizes stem cells through direct and indirect effects on bone marrow.

When an acupuncture point is stimulated, the enteric nervous system (ENS) releases neurochemical signaling molecules such as 5-HT, norepinephrine, bradykinin, histamine, and encephalin. Additionally, these molecules inhibit inflammatory reactions or promote damage repair, interfere with the afferent peripheral sensory nerve impulses, and break the vicious noxious stimuli-pain cycle, eventually relieving the pain and healing the damage. Traditional Chinese medicine relies on the flow of qi (life essence and energy) along invisible pathways, called meridians, to promote wellness and health. A network of these pathways exists throughout the body. Acupuncture’s effectiveness is based on this principle. By optimizing nerve and endocrine control, improving sleep, increasing mental tolerance to anxiety and depression, and enhancing or regulating GI function, acupuncture can eliminate abdominal pain, reduce diarrhea, and ease constipation. After one acupuncture treatment, there is an increased cellular response that lasts for several days, as proven in lab studies and numerous clinical trials.
