Premenstrual Syndrome Treatment
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of emotional and physical symptoms that occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and cease after menstruation. It has also been called by many other names, such as late luteal phase dysphoric disorder, premenstrual tension (PMT), or simply premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Restricted blood flow to the uterus is the main cause of the premenstrual syndrome. Treatment with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture can relieve symptoms by promoting blood circulation and strengthening the yin.
As many as three of every four menstruating women have experienced some form of premenstrual syndrome. Symptoms include mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, fatigue, irritability, and depression. Premenstrual syndrome has a predictable pattern of symptoms, but they can range from subtle to quite noticeable, depending on how severe they are. Premenstrual syndrome does not have to control your life. Treatments and lifestyle adjustments can help you manage or reduce its symptoms.
There are some women whose symptoms are severe enough to affect their daily lives. However, for most women, the signs and symptoms generally disappear within four days after the start of their cycle. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a form of premenstrual syndrome that causes disabling symptoms every month. In addition to depression, mood swings, anger, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and tension, PMDD can also cause depression and mood swings.
There are several factors that may contribute to premenstrual syndrome, but the exact cause is not known.
- With hormonal fluctuations and menopause, premenstrual syndrome signs and symptoms change.
- There are changes in the brain that could cause PMS symptoms. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in mood states, fluctuates in the brain. Serotonin deficiency may lead to premenstrual depression, fatigue, food cravings, and sleep problems.
- Symptoms of severe premenstrual syndrome are not necessarily caused by depression alone. Some women may have undiagnosed depression as a result.
