If the body is injured, whether by sports or overexertion, the immune system responds by swollen and inflamed. During the inflammatory response, white blood cells, proteins, antibodies, and supportive fluids rush to the wound, which causes it to become swollen. The excess fluid produced by the body protects damaged tissues from further injury because of inflammation and swelling. For these important reasons, it’s important to control swelling as much as possible, despite the fact that some swelling is unavoidable:

  • Healing may be slowed down by too much swelling.
  • Swelling may worsen if inflammation is not treated.
  • Your range of motion can be limited by excessive swelling.

Acupuncture is a widely practiced form of traditional Chinese medicine that can be used to treat many ailments. One of its benefits is the ability to reduce swelling. Acupuncture uses fine needles inserted into the skin at specific points on the body to release muscle tension and relieve pain.

Treatments usually do not cause side effects because they are non-invasive. Reduce swelling with Chinese medicine and acupuncture. The root cause of the swelling is often a sprain or strain of soft tissue (ligaments, tendons) and may require treatment over several weeks. Additionally, chronic inflammation can result from sprains or strains of muscles and joints, causing fluid to build up in the surrounding area. Swelling is something that we all deal with at one point or another, but it can be extremely uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Traditional Chinese medicine offers a safe and effective way to reduce swelling. Our acupuncturist will discuss your medical history, explain the acupuncture treatment plan, and give you the opportunity to ask questions. Your treatment will begin with a calming herbal drink made from traditional Chinese herbs and spices, followed by inserting needles into points on your body. This session takes about 30 minutes, after which you will have a few needles in place for 24 hours. Then it’s time for removal!
